As reported yesterday, I received my test WiiM Pro unit yesterday and I hope over the next week or so to relate my experience with it.

The unit came in a plain white box which I'd expect to be different on the retail units. The box contained the WiiM Pro and the accessories noted below:

1 - USB power adapter
1 - 3.5mm RCA to RCA stereo cable
1 - USB Type C cable
1 - Digital Optical Audio cable/Toslink cable

The power adaptor supplied was for USA customers I understand, so my first task was to hunt down a UK 5V/2A USB power plug - fortunately an old Samsung phone charger fitted the bill.

While the accessories are no doubt up to the task, I guess many purchasers may well have other cables they prefer. As it was my intention to use ethernet connection (for no other reason than to try it out - I haven't experienced any issues with wifi for my WiiM Mini) and a coax connection as my amp only has one optical and one coax input and the former is already used for the Mini, I had to provide my own ethernet and coax cables, both of which fitted snugly into the Pro with no issue. My Chord coax cable doesn't have a large sheath so I didn't experience any issues that others have reported with 'large audiophile cables'.

Here are a few images of the packaging, accessories and the Pro itself. In my next post, I'll include screenshots of the setup as I stepped thru the WiiM app.

Edit: as has been pointed out elsewhere, there is no headphone socket on the Pro despite one being shown in the original mockup artwork. I don't know if retail units will be the same.

After unpacking the Pro, I connected it to my UK 5V/2A power supply, to my router using an ethernet cable, and into my amp using a coax cable.

I then fired up the WiiM app on my Ipad and stepped thru setup as shown in the rather self explanatory screenshots shown. After the unit was discovered, it went thru a latency measurement test, after which I enabled Chromecast on the Pro, followed by linking it to my Alexa account and finally configuring the coax audio output resolution for 24/192.

The Wifi status page in the app (which I don't show above) displays a more correctly named Network Status page showing just the MAC and IP address of the Pro as the network cable was detected on startup.

I hope the above gives new WiiM users an idea of how easy setup is - unpacking to setup to being able to play music literally took minutes without requiring any specialist knowledge.

In later posts, I hope to relate (with screenshots as appropriate) my experience in using the Pro for Amazon Music, local files on my NAS, Spotify, Apple Music and perhaps Qobuz and Deezer both from within the WiiM app and where possible, from the streaming services own apps.

Can you have optical and spdif coax outputs working together same time? Can you set resolution parameters independently for them?

I haven’t tried that, but may do so as I test the unit. The app’s Audio Settings page for the Pro shows you can set the resolution parameters independently

Actually, re your first point, the Audio Output selection page only allows you to select one output, so I’d guess not

Can you also test the behavior of optical in? Can it be passed to any of digital outputs? Is the signal from input passed unaltered to digital outputs, or maybe it takes the resolution limitations into consideration?

Glad WiiM sent you this early production sample. You're the right man to fairly represent it.
Early predictions for the Pro described an upgraded DAC, but apparently, this didn't occur. But I think I read that the Pro has increased RAM to allow soft/firmware to manage full resolution to each WiiM-sourced system. That's a plus if it happens. (Currently, The Mini can only provide AMHD 16/41-48k to multi rooms.) I hope you'll let us know when this actually happens. Regards,

Thanks for asking that - I meant to mention it in my post above. It’s only 1m long, as is the optical cable. I had to use a longer one I had.
Thanks just want make sure have everything needed on hand. So a coax and longer USB C cable added to the needed items. Thanks for checking on that. Hopefully get my tester unit this week so super excited.

Just to note @Klipscher

Retail units won't have headphone socket. Will need to revise the mockup pic.

Just making the point that any 5v/2a charger suffices so if it didn’t come with a charger like the Mini did in the EU, it’s not necessarily insurmountable

Mini will work with any usb phone charger. Pro is demanding more. USB charging standards set max current to 1.5A in the past. New chargers can deliver much more in fast charging scenarios but they fall back to 1.5A max usually when ordinary charging method is being used. USB-C spec has increased max current to 3A but such chargers are not very common.

It's a common approach to provide a set of plugs for different sockets.
