Turns out the problem is my DAC and its firmware. I have an Ares II. The latest DAC firmware fixes the issue, but sadly it also changes the sound signature substantially so I have rolled it back. I think some users have said the popping issue when switching tracks can be fixed at the DAC end...

I’ve tried both filters, and NOS/OS, and these don’t really make much of a difference.

UPDATE: This issue is now resolved for people who have a Denafrips Ares II with the 12th Anniversary Firmware update. Thanks to Klipscher for the heads up! It was just made available recently. It fixes the clicking and popping when switching between tracks using an optical connection. However...

Thanks for this! Good to know there's a solution. My only comment is that I feel I shouldn't need to buy another piece of hardware to fix the problem (this is not directed at you, but is a general comment).

Hi WiiM Support - I confirm there is no clicking/pop noise on Spotify Connect. Sorry for misleading you in my earlier post (I thought there was). The clicking/popping happens with Qobuz, Amazon Music and Soundcloud, when using the WiiM app.

Hi Ryan - I think this is probably rights. I've been doing some research around this issue and this makes a lot of sense. I'm wondering if I would have the same issue with Coax, but I don't have a coax source to test it with. In any event, I'm going to contact Denafrips and see what they say.

Yep - this is precisely the behaviour I experience except more often than not it's more than one click AND the series of clicks have differing volumes. I'm using the Toslink cable to my DAC --> Glow Audio One tube amp. Sample rate and streaming source do not matter - I primarily use Spotify...

Thank goodness it's not me! I've tried both the stock optical cable, and my QED cable and there's no difference. From the responses of other it sounds like it may be DAC-related. Perhaps if we all log a ticket then WiiM might be motivated to address it. Alternatively, if any of the admins...
