Please help me understand a Replay gain issue I experience.

First of all the configuration:
Synology Diskstation DS220+ running DSM 7.2.2-72806 update 2
Synology Media Server, version 2.2.1-3406
Wiim Pro, firmware 4.8.639134
Wiim Home App 3.0.5.24121118 on iPad

The WiiM Pro is connected via optical out to my NAD stereo amplifier
Both NAS and WiiM Pro are connected to my router via cables

The Diskstation stores a lot of CDs ripped using dBpoweramp, the files were saved with Replay gain tags.
I use the WiiM Home App to select music files to be played from the Synology Media Server.

When I listen to Internet radio stations the WiiM volume is usually set to 40 or 50 which, combined with the -20 dB volume setting of my amplifier, produces a sound level I like.
When playing the ripped FLAC files I have to increase the WiiM output to 60 or 70 to obtain a similar sound level.
When I play purchased FLAC files a WiiM volume of 40 or 50 is sufficient again.

So it seems that the Replay gain tag in my ripped files is not supported in this setup.

In release notes of recent WiiM firmware updates I see that WiiM have been working on support of Replay gain of various on-line services.

This makes me wonder if support of Replay gain in the Synology environment is something that could be solved by WiiM?

I have a Synology NAS also, but used for storage only
Music server is a pi5 with LMS 9.0.1 picoreplayer
Squeezebox touches and Wiim Ulltra
mp3, ogg, flac files replaygain scanned.

set to "Smart gain" in LMS
Replaygain works fine

Hi Manusz,

A new firmware and app update will be released next week, introducing replay gain support for NAS and USB Media Library. Stay tuned!

Slighty off topic: does replay gain alter the quality of the sound?

Does Replaygain use embedded loudness data or will the file be analysed upon playback?

I don't know if I maybe need to analyse my library. Running Plex on a Synology unit here, but most of it was ripped with iTunes.

It reads tags, it doesn't analyse the files.

You have to scan the files first, I use foobar. It then applies metadata, like artist/track number etc.

Hello,

Where do I find the Replay gain settings for USB/NAS?

Is there some indication in the app that Replay Gain is being used when playing a track? Or do we just have to listen with it on and off to see if there is a difference?

Not that I’ve noticed, so I guess you need to trust your ears

On the home music share page three dot menu in the top corner.
Thank you! It says it will only work on files with Replay gain tags. How do I know if my files are taged or not? Stupid question, sorry.

On Windows, you’d need to use something like MP3tag, or if you used dbpoweramp to rip files from CD, I think it adds info to the File Explorer property display.

If you haven't added replaygain tags they probably aren't there. You can view tags in mp3tag or a similar program. You can add replaygain tags using foobar2000 or dBPoweramp etc.

Thousands of files so that is just to much work. So I guess I'll just have to live without Replay gain then. Thank you for always helping out!

Spent hundreds of hours correctly tagging all files, but never added a Replay gain tags. Actually never heard about it before.
