I didn’t realise there was such a thing; just found out.

Two questions:

1 - Is there any difference in the end sound quality?
2 - Can WiiM handle them all anyway?

Remember quite dark only this was a discussion in a forum related to dbPoweramp. But that is ten years ago, since then nothing read or heard.

No they are just different levels of data compression. Flac works in a similar way to a zip archive file. It’s lossless compression but you can alter the level of compression applied to make files smaller. It takes more cpu to encode the higher compressed ones, decoding is the same on any.

Yeah, dbPoweramp (and I’m sure other tools) gives you the option to choose which compression level when ripping/ converting. If memory serves me, it defaults at level 5.

Remember the arguments too about whether WAV or FLAC sounded better since the former needed less compute power?
 
I have always used flac uncompressed via db Poweramp and the hdcd extension for hdcd's. Even over poor wifi connections have never heard dropouts.
