Firmware updates are indicated by a green upward pointing arrow next to the device name aren't they? I think the dot is a more general notification indicator which is also shown on the associated item in settings for the device.

Output Resolution in Audio Settings had such green dots - but I don't know why.
When I entered these options (without changing the value) dots disappeared...
